The use of Energy on stage. Dialogue, Sound & Lights

From the audiences feedback it was clear that the live sound left a harmonious ringing in their ears. The vast majority of them expressed that the recorded sound was a distraction and that the company should focus on exploring new and exciting ways of producing sound on stage. This also create links with the theme itself ‘Energy’, the audience like the fact the actors where producing live sound in front of them. The sound is about the use of energy and waste of energy and harnessing it. The theme of the play is also embodied in the style of the production itself. The actors used many different ways to create sounds such as, a whirly tube to make the wind noises, their voice, cutlery, crocks, guitar, iPod and even the actor movement on stage. All of these required some kind of energy and the audience could see this and found it interesting to watch along with the intellectual stimulation for the script. There was also a bike used on stage to produce many sounds such as the chain, the spokes on the wheels and the pedals. This clearly demonstrated a use of energy just by riding it however it also produced light for the stage, which the audience found extremely innovative.

There were electronically manipulated sound produced by Dereck Nesbit, the sound designer, these were the recorded sounds. Even though the audience found these to be distracting on the night of the Arena collaborative theatremakers evening, the intention for them remains true. The sounds were distorted and manipulated, sound such as mechanical sounds and electrical sounds to attempt to create resonant sounds images, which have a metaphorical intent. All the sounds used have a poetic significance in the play.
